After we heard the feedback on our Facebook collaboration for the Houston Community Boost Scholarship, which awards the first Houston cohort of our Software Engineering Immersive with full-tuition scholarships, we knew we had to continue our collaboration.

So in our effort to make coding education accessible to everyone, we’ve partnered with Facebook on an entirely new scholarship focused on changing the face of tech, offering scholarships for women and other underrepresented groups in the tech industry.

That’s why, this past week at Facebook’s F8 conference, our Co-Founder and Dean Avi Flombaum flew out to San Jose and announced our new Facebook + Flatiron Breakthrough Scholarship! The scholarship, which totals $250,000, will be available for career-change students. Twenty candidates for our flagship Software Engineering Immersive and Online Web Developer Programs in New York and Washington, D.C. will be eligible for cohorts later this year.

“We are committed to supporting underrepresented minorities and women gain the skills they need to become a developer through alternative coding education paths like Flatiron School,” said Ime Archibong, Facebook’s vice president of product partnerships. “We hope the donation will eliminate a portion of the financial barrier to pursue these paths.”

But on top of Facebook’s $250,000, Flatiron School will match and award another $250,000, totaling $500,000 in scholarships.

“We knew that to be really be impactful, we had to make it more accessible,” said Enbar. “Education shouldn’t just be for those who can afford it.”

Since we started in 2012, we’ve awarded over $2 million in Flatiron School scholarships to women in tech, and we’ve loved every second of it.
