This summer, model Karlie Kloss is sponsoring the Kode with Karlie Scholarship, giving 21 girls across the United States access to Flatiron School’s summer coding classes. Meet Gretchen Hubbard, a globetrotting do-gooder who is inspired by 3D printing.
1. Tell us who you are in one sentence.
I am an outgoing, adventurous, and spiritual person who has a passion for helping people – especially children!
2. How did you find out about the Kode with Karlie Scholarship?
I follow Karlie Kloss on Instagram and discovered the Kode with Karlie scholarship through her posts.
3. What inspired you to learn to code?
Within the last year, I have become inspired by how technology is changing the world around me. From 3D printing to robotics, it’s amazing how lines of code can power such amazing inventions. I love that these technologies can help improve people’s lives and I want to be a part of making that happen.
4. Why is it so important for women your age to learn to code?
With technology becoming more important in the world and all around us, I think it’s important for women my age to be empowered to be a part of creating these devices. It’s a very useful skill that can be applied to any field you want to go into!
5. Who is your biggest role model?
The biggest role model in my life would have to be my sister Sarah. Sarah is a few years older than me and growing up I’ve always looked up to her. I admire her dedication, passion, creative thinking, and strong leadership skills. She’s always encouraging me and pushing me outside my comfort zone, which I appreciate! Couldn’t ask for a better sister!
6. What are you most excited for this summer?
I am most excited to attend the Software Engineering course at the Flatiron School! I’m also looking forward to going on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic this June where I will be working at Makarios and in surrounding villages.
7. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
If I could travel anywhere in the world, I would go to New Zealand to explore both the ocean and the mountains!
Watch Gretchen’s Kode with Karlie video submission to see why she was inspired to Kode.
As you can see, our scholars don’t fit the typical model of a coder. They’re passionate, athletic and creative. Want to join them this summer? Check out our course catalog to find a class near you!
